Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research is focused on Implicature used in the Headline News of “Indonesia This Morning” Program in Metro TV Website using Grice’s theory of implicature. Implicature is a component of speaker meaning that constitutes an aspect of what is meant in a speaker’s utterance without being part of what is said. The theory of implicature distinguishes implicature into conventional implicature and non-conventional implicature. Furthermore, non-conventional distinguishes implicature into generalize conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature. Based on that background, the research about Implicature Used the Headline News of “Indonesia This Morning” Program in Metro TV Website is conducted with the following problems: (1) what kinds of Implicature used in the Headline News of “Indonesia This Morning” Program in Metro TV Website ?. (2). How are Implicature applied in the Headline News of “Indonesia This Morning” Program in Metro TV Website?.This research is conducted using a descriptive qualitative method based on Grice theory of mplicature. The data are in the form of transcript of Headline News of “Indonesia This Morning” Program in Metro TV Website.
Data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated research questions. Firstly, the Headline News is a kind of generalized conversational implicature when the Newscaster made the Headline News is one which does not depend on particular features of the context. Since The Headline is clear, the hearers can guess the intended message based on their general knowledge. Secondly, the Headline News is a kind of particularized conversational implicature when the Newscaster made the Headline News is one which depends on particular features of the context. The hearers are required to hear the explanation from the Newscaster in order to understand the context of the Headline News. The last, the implicature are applied in Headline News of” Indonesia This Morning” Program obey Maxim of Quantity and Quality. The Headline News obeys Maxim of Quantity when the Newscaster does not give information than is required. Furthermore, The Headline News obeys Maxim of Quality when the Newscaster tries to make the Headline News one that is true especially the Newscaster does not say what the Newscaster believes to be false and the Newscaster does not say that for which he lacks adequate evidence.
