Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study focuses on analyzing comprehension disorder of the schizophrenic character in Shutter Island movie. Comprehension disorder is a language disability which causes impairment of the understanding on expression of language. Language disorders or language impairments are disorders that involve the processing of linguistic information. The speech of people with schizophrenia sometimes jumps from one topic to another topic. His thoughts of feeling to real life suffer from delusion and withdraw increasingly from social relationship into a life imagination. They often suffer terrifying symptom such as hearing internal voices not heard by others, or believing that other people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them. They have deficit in comprehension, production, attention and cerebral lateralization of language.
The aim of this study is to get the understanding and detailed explanation about comprehension disorder of the schizophrenic character of Shutter Island movie. This research will give understanding on the types of comprehension disorder and in which context comprehension disorder occurs in Shutter Island movie.
This study uses qualitative descriptive which describes about language disorder to explore the application of sentence form as language disorder on language comprehension in schizophrenic utterances which are spoken by Teddy. The data are collected through several types. First is watching the movie. Second, selecting and categorizing the data. The last is browsing transcript. The data are analyzed firstly by conducting the analysis in each category, and second is selecting the data into the kinds of comprehension disorder. Third is analyzing the data and sentences from each category more deeply. Fourth, describing how the language disorder shown by the main character of schizophrenic man in Shutter Island movie. Then, making conclusion from the result of analysis which gives detail description related to language disorder perspectives.
The finding of this study finds several types of comprehension disorder shown by the main character of shutter Island movie; they are derailment, flight of ideas, retardation, perseveration, irrelevant answer, circumstantiality, and pressure of speech. From the analysis, it is found that perseveration mostly occurs, and not only type of comprehension disorder is shown by the schizophrenic main character such as blocking, neologism, word salad, and clang association. This study found that comprehension disorder occurs when the schizophrenic main character feels angry, afraid, confused, and disappointed.
