Abstract
ABSTRACT
A communication can fail if there is no mutual understanding between the speaker and the hearer, it occurs because the context and the importance of context may cause meaning deviation by the speaker. It can be found from a movie as one of popular mass media, and it is close to people daily activity. Based on the reason above, the question can be formulated as follows: (1) What are the types of Implicature used by the main characters in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” Movie? , and (2) How are the Implicature used by the main characters in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” Movie. This study aims to (1) identify type of implicature as it is found in conversation between main characters in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” Movie, and (2) discover how the implicature are used by the main characters in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” movie.
This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative method. It was used to give comprehensive descriptions and discover the use of implicature in the movie. The researcher was the key instrument of the research because she was who analyzed the data. The techniques of data collection were looking for the transcript of the movie, watching the movie, reading the transcript of the movie, and selecting utterances produced by the main characters. The data analysis was done by arranging data collection, classifying the utterances into the types of implicature, discussing the findings, and concluding.
This study found several findings: (1) Implicature used by the main characters in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” movie could be categorized into conventional implicature and conversational implicature. Conversational implicature was divided into generalization conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature, (2) Conventional implicature was used by the speaker to express meaning behind the utterance. The generalized conversational implicature was used when the speaker made utterance become context-free, so the hearer can guess the meaning behind the utterance with their general knowledge. Furthermore, particularized conversational implicature used when the speaker made the utterance become context-bound. The utterance categorized into conversational implicature needs to be analyzed from the maxim: maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner.
Finally, the researcher suggests to the future researchers to conduct further research concerning on the study of implicatures used in other subjects, such as; picture, sign, article, et cetera. they also can uses other theories of implicature for analyzing their data.
