Abstract
ABSTRACT
Rhetorical features take a role in enhancing the credibility and the truthfulness of news facts. These are used intentionally by journalists and newspaper to persuade, convince and influence readers’ minds and attention. Moreover, news discourses are used as market commodity to sell ideologies and opinions in order to control the public. This research is an attempt to explain the research problem of what rhetorical features are used and of how those features are used in headlines news of The Jakarta Post. The researcher decides to select headlines news of The Jakarta Post electronic version published on May 2012 which report about the cancellation of Lady Gaga concert issue hold in Central Jakarta Indonesia.
To answer the problems, the researcher uses van Dijk’s concept of rhetorical features used in news discourses which proposes that esthetic functions of language can be used ideologically to persuade society’s backgrounds. Methodologically, this research uses descriptive qualitative. The data are collected by skimming and intensive reading to find out the aspects of discourse.
The findings reveal that the journalists of The Jakarta Post use rhetorical features to strengthen their position and opinions and to downgrade the power, authority, forces, and strengths of opposites and to drive the readers that in-groups belong to the right side and, conversely, the out-groups as the blamed figures or agents in the discourse. In the headlines news, the journalists use rhetorical features such as hyperbolic use of metaphor, metonymy, Alliteration, number game, mentioning previous event as conditions or causes and describing and predicting next event, and using direct/indirect quotes and mentioning opinions from different people with different backgrounds. Therefore, this research is in line with the theory of Rhetoric of news discourse proposed by van Dijk which uncovers the esthetic structures of news used to persuasive ends.
The researcher suggests the next researcher to combine van Dijk’s concept and other concepts of rhetoric such as Corbett’s and Connors’ theory of rhetoric because the theory provides clear explanation and more complete classifications of rhetorical devices. In addition, the researcher, in the form of subject, suggests the next researcher to do not only analyze rhetorical features in headlines news articles but also other column. There are several articles which offer rich features of rhetoric, they are: lead sentences, editorials, and opinion articles.
