Abstract

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study is to understand the Speech Acts of the utterances produced by main character in Gran Torino Movie through Cross-Culture Communication. The problem investigated in this study is how are the speech acts used by main character in Gran Torino Movie? As the foundation of the analysis, some theories having relationship with the problem is used. The theories are culture communication of American and Hmong, kind of speech acts, types of speech acts, function of speech acts, the way of performing speech acts, and felicity conditions.

This analysis uses descriptive approach. The data are taken from the utterance produced by main character in Gran Torino Movie analyzed with Speech acts and selected by cross-culture communication between American and Hmong as Asian. The main source of the data is manuscripts consisting of some scenes called Data Presentation which consisted of some conversations being selected utterances based on the cross-culture communication then analyzed with Felicity Conditions and Speech Acts Theory

Some finding can be taken from the analysis of the collected data. There are some utterances are selected based on the cross-culture communication between American and Asian, Hmong, that lives in America. The utterances are produced by main character in Gran Torino Movie. The illocutionary acts of the selected utterances are Directive, Representative, Commissive, Declaration, Verdictives, and Expositives. The utterance acts, which are performed, have the illocutionary acts of asking, commanding, warning, threatening, asserting, instructing, and statement. . The most illocutionary acts of the utterances are Directive and representatives because both, Directives Illocutionary and Representatives Illocutionary Shows and proves about the cross-culture communication between American and Hmong.

Finally, further researcher is suggested to find some other facts of speech acts and cross culture communication which are not mentioned in this study yet.
