Abstract
ABSTRACT
The idea of colonization had been spread out from many years by the West countries. The impact of colonization was strongly felt by the East countries. The west was doing some strategies to get the power from the East countries. One of the strategies that are used by the West Country is Stereotyping. Stereotyping is used to make the West appeared contras by the East in every single aspects. The West draws some stereotypes that placed them in the superior position. On the other hand, the East is created to be the powerless and dominated group. Having felt the unequal condition, the East does the resistance to get the power back. The East does the resistance in some ways. The purpose of the resistance is deconstructing the idea that has been spread out by the West countries.
The researcher uses literary criticism method to elaborate the data. The research also used the descriptive approach to explain the data. In collecting the data the researcher did the close reading, the second reading in order to give code and choose the suitable data for the analysis, then the research selected the data to get the most important data which is related to the topic, after that, the data were described in a paragraph. The last the data was being checked to find the appropriateness of the data.
This research analyzed the drama script entitled M. Butterfly which was written by David Henry Hwang. The findings of this research were showed that there was some practice of stereotyping that is done by the French characters to hold the power of the Chinese women characters. The stereotyping that can be found in this study is inferiority of Chinese women characters, uncivilized Chinese women characters’ culture, Chinese women characters are powerless and uneducated Chinese women characters. The reactions of the Chinese women characters to the stereotype are Showing the Chinese women Identity and, Identity Falsification.
This study uses Postcolonial literary criticism as the approach of the study. The Postcolonial study was the most appropriate study to gain the data that was related to Stereotyping and Resistance in the drama.
