Self defense of main character of Treasure of Khan by Clive Cussler and Dirk Cussler

ABSTRACT

Defensiveness, according Freud, is an essential part of the normal personality. Even a strong ego cannot tolerate conscious acknowledgement of all the perils of the world or all the individual’s own imperfections. However, a healthy ego is fairly judicious in its choice and timing of defenses, it neither excessively distorts huge chunks of reality nor consistently distorts in the same way, in other word, it does not use the same defenses for all problems. Often, the healthy ego can overcome the defenses when it needs to.

This research is conducted based on statements of the problems. Identifying self defence on main character on Treasure of Khan, influence and caused. The research is also designed as literary criticism. In literary criticism, the study related to the definition, analogy and analysis of literary work. To analyze the object of this study, the researcher uses psychoanalysis. The researcher applies this theory by observing the problem of Pitt and Giordino and also caused and influences they done defence mechanism.

Based on the analysis, the researchers find the following result. First, there are many solution for all of problems and to be defense in our life. Like story in Treasure of Khan Pitt and Giordino using some of defense mechanism to fight the enemy. For example they take repression, regression, displacement, etc. Second, the defense mechanism has big influence. This influence make Pitt and Giordino can survive. Pitt and Giordino can fight seiche wave, pretend as security in order to can enter in Borjin’s house, and they can give good job in NUMA after they wife passed away. So they didn’t want to feel sad for a long time.
