Abstract
ABSTRACT
Nobody speaks in the same way, it means that people have their own style in order to convey their message to others. Concerning this part concludes that they use speech styles in their daily conversation. In this case speech styles used in talk show program interesting to observe, because it provide the host and the guest is having delightful conversation. That why the researcher conducted the speech styles used in Talk Indonesia, Metro TV’s Talk show program. The aim of this research is to know the speech styles used by the host and the guests in Talk Indonesia Metro TV’s talk show program, the dominant style used and how use it.
The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. It describes speech styles used by the host and the guests in Talk Indonesia. The data are the utterances used by the host and the guest of Talk Indonesia which is taken from the video of Talk Indonesia published on Sunday 24th of March 2013. The data are collected by watching and listening the video of Talk Indonesia then select it into five style of speech styles according Martin Joos theory . After that the data are analyzed by classifying them into five styles of speech styles, explaining them according the characteristic of each style, looking for the dominant types, and describing how it is used.
The finding of this research show that the host and the guests in Talk Indonesia only use four styles of speech styles. They are formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. The most dominant type that they used is casual style which is used 35 times. Moreover this research also found that the host and the guest in Talk Indonesia use speech styles to make the speaker’s idea clearer, to add artistic effect, and also to increase the hearer taste.
