Explicature of warning signs in Juanda Airport Surabaya viewed from carston

ABSTRACT

Explicature is propositional form communicated by an utterance, which is pragmatically constructed on the basis of the propositional schema or template (logical form) that the utterance encodes; its content is an amalgam of linguistically decoded material and pragmatically inferred material. As we know, every warning signs that posted in certain place has certain purpose indeed, but many of us do not know the meaning it self or how the word can be short message but have full meaning. Here, the researcher is interested in analyzing the warning signs by using Carston’s Theory in Explicature. This study focuses on analyzing explicature of warning signs posted in Juanda Airport Surabaya.

This research uses descriptive qualitative method, because the data are in the form of written texts of warning signs posted in Juanda Airport Surabaya that presented in sentences. Beside, this study can help the readers in understanding short written text in warning signs that posted along Juanda Airport. In this research, the researcher uses Robyn Carston theory. The data have been selected only on six utterance of warning signs posted in Juanda Airport Surabaya based on the theory of explicature that are; no smoking, no entry, caution wet floor, smoking area, please hold handrail, please use legal airport taxi. Explicature which is found in Juanda Airport is mostly in the form of direction instead of warning signs. So, the researcher is difficult to get the data more on warning signs in English.

This research aims at answering the question what steps of explicature are used in warning signs in Juanda Airport Surabaya. The results of this study show that there are five ways to reach the explicature: Firstly, the researcher specifies the data which can be categorized as warning signs that posted along in Juanda Airport Surabaya. Secondly, determining the vague terms which can be add the new words that do not against the original meaning in order to explain vague terms in salient meaning. Thirdly, adding some disambiguation word if it not against the original meaning. Fourthly, explicature is developed in reference assignment which needed to explicate the vague terms. The last, data sources is discuss by making a conclusion from the analysis. However, the policymakers let the readers to think in understanding in warning signs that posted at Juanda Airport. These findings are recommended for the passengers and visitors, to enlarge the view on pragmatics, especially related to explicature. Beside, to raise the pragmatic awareness in order they can really understand the policymakers want.

The researcher hopes, this research can give understanding and information to the readers in warning signs in certain place, actually in Juanda Airport Surabaya. Furthermore, it also recommended for the next researchers and give inspiration to them who study about explicature in other areas.
