Politeness strategies of closing conversation used in The Judge movie

ABSTRACT

The strategy of closing conversation is a way to close or to end the conversation politely. It is as a sign to the hearer that the conversation is moving to end. This kind of strategy can be used in the form of daily conversation, speech, talk show even the movie. Therefore, The Judge movie used by researcher as an object of the study and the main focus of this study is the closing utterances used by the characters of The Judge Movie.

To get the answer of the research question, the researcher used the theory formulated by Coppock (2005) about the politeness strategies of closing conversation. In doing this study the researcher used the descriptive qualitative research to be applied on this study. However, in collecting data of the research, the researcher used some steps, those are: firstly, the researcher browsed the full movie of The Judge movie and watched the movie, it was done because to help the researcher understood the context. Secondly, to make the researcher understood characters’ speech of the Judge movie, he looked for the full authentic scripts of the movie. Thirdly, the researcher classified and choose the data. The researcher dropped unnecessary data and identified the needed data. The last, arranging the data systematically in accordance to the problem of the study in order it could be analyzed easily.

The result of this study, the researcher found 17 data, which are divided into three types. Positive face-saving strategies (the positive comment e.g. It is good, you are funny, the excuse e.g. Daddy has to work, and imperative to end e.g. I gotta turn off the phone). Combined positive and negative face-saving strategies (stating the goal e.g. Kind of a touchy subject, summary e.g. me neither, an expression of thanks e.g. thank you) and solidarity strategies (plan e.g. see you there, and general wish e.g. you will be fine). In the other hand, this study does not find the mentioning name strategy and blame strategy because the context of movie supports the speaker not to use those kinds of strategies.

Strategi dalam mengakhiri percakapan adalah salah satu cara untuk mengakhiri atau menutup percakapan dengan sopan. Ini adalah sebagai tanda kepada pendengar bahwasanya percakapan akan segera selesai. Macam strategi ini dapat digunakan dalam bentuk percakapan setiap hari, pidato, wawancara, bahkan dalam film. Oleh karena itu, film The Judge dipilih oleh peneliti sebagai objek penelitian dan fokus utama dalam penelitian ini adalah ungkapan dalam mengakhiri percakapan yang dipakai oleh para tokoh dalam film The Judge.

Untuk mendapatkan jawaban dari rumusan masalah, peneliti menggunakan teori yang diformulasikan oleh Coppock (2005) tentang strategi kesopanan untuk mengakhiri percakapan. Untuk mengerjakan penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif. Bagaimanapun juga, untuk mengumpulkan data dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan berbagai langkah: langkah yang pertama yaitu, peneliti mencari film The Judge yang lengkap kemudian menontonya, langkah ini digunakan untuk memudahkan peneliti dalam memahami situasi dan kondisi. Langkah kedua yaitu, untuk memudahkan peneliti dalam memahami kata yang diucapkan oleh para tokoh, peneliti mencari naskah yang asli yang sesuai dengan film The Judge. Langkah ketiga yaitu, peneliti mengklasifikasikan data dan memilih data. Peneliti membuang data yang tidak penting, dan mengidentifikasi data yang diperlukan. Langkah terakhir yaitu, menyusun data secara sistematis sesuai dengan rumusan masalah agar supaya bisa dianalisis dengan mudah.

Adapun hasil dalam penelitian ini adalah, peneliti menemukan 17 data yang mana data tersebut dibagi menjadi tiga tipe. Positif Strategi menyelamatkan muka (komentar yang positif, contoh “ini bagus, kamu lucu” , Permisi contoh “ayah harus bekerja”, dan mendesak untuk mengakhiri contoh“saya akan mematikan telfonya”). Gabungan positif dan negatif strategi menyelamatkan muka (mengungkapkan tujuan contoh “subjek yang sangat menarik”, ringkasan contoh “begitupun saya”, ungkapan terimakasih contoh”terimakash”) dan solidaritas strategi (rencana contoh “sampai jumpa disana” dan harapan umum contoh “kamu akan baik-baik saja”). Disisi lain, penelitian ini tidak menemukan strategi dengan menyebutkan nama dan menyalahkan, karena kondisi dan situasi dalam film tidak mendukung para tokoh untuk menggunakan kedua strategi tersebut.
