Figurative languages on the lyrics of the songs in Goodbye Lullaby album by Avril Lavigne

ABSTRACT

This thesis analyzed the figurative languages on the lyrics of the songs in Goodbye Lullaby album to find out the types of figurative languages. The researcher chooses figurative language because it discusses about the real meaning of the words, sometimes the words which consists of figure of speech using connotative meaning and parable in words. Figurative language is a language which incorporates the speaker’s desire, to touch the emotion, to cause a shock, and persuade into action (Peter, 2002: 12). And, the process of each figurative is another name speech act theory.(Yule, 1996: 27). The researcher chooses Avril Songs in Goodbye Lullaby album which become the data since their songs are famous and phenomenal at that time which succeeds in persuading the listeners. Another reason is the content the songs which consist of many types of figurative language.

This research uses descriptive qualitative research method. The researcher gets data in figurative language utterances and the researcher chooses utterances in the songs as data source. There are some steps that are employed by the researcher to analyze this study. First, the researcher takes the data from the internet. Second, the researcher reads whole transcription of the lyrics carefully. Third, the researcher tries to find out figurative language in each data by giving a code. The last step is analyzing each data to find types and the process of each figurative language.

After analyzing the data, the researcher finds some types of figurative languages such as, hyperbole, personification, litotes, simile, repetition, and metaphor in the lyrics of pop and rock songs, it was also found that the figurative language are used in the lyrics has function such as, expressive, declaration, and representative. Expressive is used to express psychological state of the situation such as pain, like, dislike, joy, and sorrow, (see datum 1). Declaration which includes of several acts such as declaring, divorcing, resigning, and firing, (see datum 9). The last is representative is used to describe, claim and emphasize, (see datum 8). And those findings deal with love and the faithful in lyrics of song.

There is still much linguistics uniqueness in the songs of Goodbye Lullaby album. This research only focuses on the types and the process of figurative languages used on the lyrics of songs in Goodbye Lullaby album by Avril Lavigne. For the next researchers, do analyze about figurative languages on many genres of songs but the subject should be specific so that the findings is not general.
