Error analysis on the Translation Tourism Page of Probolinggo Regency Website

ABSTRACT

Errors were predicted to be the result of existing mother tongue habits in the new language. Most errors come from interference and consequently a major part of applied linguistic research to comparing the mother tongue and the target language in order to predict or explain the errors made by learners of any particular language background. The translation tourism page of Probolinggo regency website is treated as the data in this research because it is a kind of medium information about some activities in Probolinggo regency and it should be no errors in it because it is an official website. This study intends to analyze grammatical errors and the factors that caused them on the translation tourism page of Probolinggo regency website based on surface strategy taxonomy which includes four types of errors: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering.

This research is qualitative research because this research is conducted natural setting. It is also called descriptive because it describes a phenomenon and explores the errors that are found in the translation tourism page of Probolinggo regency website. The data are taken from the official website of Probolinggo regency; http://www.probolinggokab.go.id/ . The instrument of this study is the researcher herself. It is because the researcher is the only instrument that can collect, analyze and explore the data from the translation tourism page of Probolinggo regency website.

The errors which are found in this research are little bit different with the theory used. There are some errors from the classifications of errors which are found in this research, but some of them are not found. Errors which occur in this research are omission of grammatical morpheme, simple addition, misformation of archi and alternating forms, and misordering. From those classifications, the higher number of errors found in this research is omission of grammatical morpheme. The error is not found in this theory is a sentence consists of more than one error type. Moreover, there are many mistyping in this study which is not classified further. Language transfer and interlingual interference are the factors that caused errors in this study.

Considering the importance of analyzing the grammatical error, the researcher suggests that the next researchers conduct the related by analyzing the grammatical error based on combination between surface strategy and communicative effect taxonomy to find the errors in deep structure which did not analyze by the previous researchers. These theories will find the comparisons between the structure of L2 errors and certain other types of construction.
