Hesitation utterances produced by broadcaster and callers in “RRI Radio English” program of RRI Malang

ABSTRACT

This thesis entitled Hesitation Utterances Produced By Broadcaster and Callers In “RRI Radio English” Program of RRI Malang is intended to analyze hesitation phenomenon used by the broadcasters and the callers which was found on the dialogue script of the “RRI Radio English”.

The objectives of this study are to find out the types and the reasons of hesitation used in “RRI Radio English” program of RRI Malang on 26th of April to 3rd of May 2009.

The design of this research uses descriptive qualitative method. The key instrument of this research is the researcher herself. The analysis of the data is identifying the data which include four kinds of hesitation, they are; false start, restart, pause (filled pause and silent pause), and word lengthening, arranging the data based on the four types of hesitation by classifying them one by one and then put them based on four kinds of hesitation, describing and discussing the findings related to the objectives of the study and making conclusions.

As the result, the researcher found that there are many utterances related to hesitation. From those utterances, the researcher found that there are 4 types of hesitations; they are false start, restart, pauses (filled pause and silent pause), filled pause divided into two (unlexicalized and lexicalized) and word lengthening. In this study, the researcher found out that the broadcasters and the callers liked using unlexicalized pause than false start and lexicalized pause

In term of reasons of hesitation, the researcher found 4 reasons; they are: pragmatic reason, come up for air, planning the utterance and giving communicative information.

Finally this research only discusses what are the types and the reasons of hesitation in spoken language; however, it is suggested for further researchers to conduct the research, which not only focuses on types and the reasons of hesitation of spoken language but also in written language.
