Abstract

ABSTRACT

This thesis examines the use of apology strategies. These are used by Ahmad Jauhari Yahya as CEO and Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof as Chairman of Malaysia airlines. They offer clarification about MH370 accident in Malaysia Airlines’ News Conference.

This study applies descriptive qualitative method in finding apology strategies used. In analyzing the data, this study follows four steps: (1) Finding the the utterance of the apology expression in order to understand what the speaker’s aim; (2) Identifying and classifying the utterance based on the category of apology strategy; (3) discussing and analyzing the data using the theory of apology strategies proposed by Anna Trosborg; (4) and making conclusion based on the result of the data analysis to answer research problem.

The result of this study presents the types of apology strategies used by Ahmad Jauhari Yahya as CEO and Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof as chairman of Malaysia airlines in Malaysia Airlines News Conference. Those include found four types of apology strategies and those are followed by sub-categories. There are explanation or account (explicit explanation (5)), offering of repair (repair (5)), expressing concern for hearer (16), and rejection explicit denial of responsibilities (1).
