Speech acts performed in Masterchef Australia season 2

ABSTRACT

There are all sort of other things can be done with words such us requesting, asking question, giving order, making promise, etc. Those acts through the utterances is named speech act. This thesis examines the types and the process of speech acts performed in Masterchef Australia season 2 especially on the mystery box challenge. In this case the researcher uses judges utterances as the data to be analyzed.

The researcher applies the descriptive qualitative method to investigate the data which are found in mystery box challenge of Masterchef Australia season 2. All the data were analyzed through words and utterances and then explained descriptively by using Bach and Harnish (1979) theory of speech acts especially on the types and process of the speech acts used in Masterchef Australia season 2.

The findings of the study show that The Masterchef Australia season 2 used three types or three classification of illocutionary acts. They are constatives, directives, and acknowledgements. The type of illocutionary acts mostly used in Masterchef Australia season 2 is directives. Furthermore, the researcher also found that there are some speech acts which are succeed and some are not by having analysis during the process of illocutionary acts.

Based on the findings there are some suggestions which can be offered. Since the present study examines the area of speech act deals with the types and the process supported by the theory of Bach and Harnish (1979), the researcher suggests to the next researcher to conduct the same field research (using the same theory of Bach and Harnish (1979)) and have the deeper analysis of speech act on this subject through Mutual Contextual Beliefs (MCBs) and involve the Speech Act Schemata (SAS). Both MCBs and SAS by Bach and Harnish (1979) will complement this research and it has not been done by any researcher.

Terdapat banyak hal yang dapat dilakukan dengan hanya mengucapkan kata- kata seperti meminta seseorang melakukan sesuatu, menanyakan pertanyaan, memberikan perintah, membuat suatu janji, dan lain- lain. Hal- hal tersebut dinamakan Speech Act. Skripsi ini mengulas tipe- tipe dan proses terjadinya speech act yang terdapat pada Masterchef Australia 2 khususnya pada tantangan miystery box. Dalam hal ini peneliti menggunakan kalimat- kalimat yang digunakan oleh para juri, sebagai data untuk dianalis.

Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk mengolah data yang ditemukan pada tantangan myery box Masterchef Australia 2. Data yang berupa kalimat- kalimat kemudian akan dijelaskan dan dianalisa dengan menggunakan teori dari Bach dan Harnish (1979), terutama pada klasifikasi atau tipe- tipe speech act dan prosesnya.

Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa di dalam Masterchef Astralia 2 terdapat tiga macam ilokusi. Ilokusi tersebut adalah constatives, directives, dan acknowledgements. Tipe ilokusi yang paling banyak digunakan adalah directives. Peneliti juga menemukan beberapa speech act yang berhasil dan beberapa yang tidak dari hasil analisa selama speech act berlangsung.

Berdasarkan hasil dari penelitian ini, ada beberapa saran yang dapat diberikan. Penelitian ini membahas tentang tipe- tipe dan proses terjadinya speech acts menggunakan teori Bach dan Harnish (1979). Peneliti menyrankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya yang meneliti dalam bidang yang sama untuk meneliti area lain dari speech act, yaitu Contextual Beliefs (MCBs) dan Speech Act Schemata (SAS) dengan menggunakan teori Bach dan Harnish (1979).
