Code Switchingused by the teacher of speaking at Workshop Training Center (WTC) Pare-Kediri

ABSTRACT

This study investigates code switching used by the teacher of speaking at WTC Pare-Kediri. The aim of this study is to find the types and functions of code switching used by the teacher of speaking at WTC Pare-Kediri.

This research used qualitative research because it analyzes the data in the form of words descriptively. The data were taken from the teacher’s speaking utterances when she was teaching in speaking program at WTC. The researcher collected the data by recording the teacher’s speech from October 7th 2012 until October 14th 2012 at WTC. Inanalyzing the types of code switching, the researcher used Romaine’s theory, while the researcher used Hoffman’s theory in analyzing the functions of code switching.

The result of this study are: (1) there are three types of code switching used by the teacher of speaking at WTC Pare-Kediri: tag switching, inter- sentential code switching, and intra- sentential code switching. (2) the functions of code switching used by the teacher of speaking in that course are repetition for clarification and expressing group identity.

Based on the findings of the study it is suggested that the next researchers improvethe objectives of the study and the problems of the study. They are: the next researchers are recommended to analyze the function in each type of code switching. Next, further researchersare expected to analyze code switching in more than two languages. The last, the next researchers are suggested to continue this research which covers all teachers in WTC Pare-Kediri as subject of the research, so that they can enrich more various context and more information about code switching.
