Abstract
ABSTRACT
Studying associative meaning is the way to understand the words or sentences are used and conveyed different meaning in our daily communication; spoken and written form. It is very important to study about meaning. Hence, the reader or hearer can understand what the writer or speaker means.
Time is one of the foreign magazines presenting English language published on April –May 2011 which consist of Politics, Business, Health and Science. In this research the researcher only focuses on Politics section, which especially on its headline. With the regard to that, Headline is the title of a news report set in big and bold letters.
In this study, the researcher attempts to use descriptive qualitative method to arrive at a rich description of words, phrases or sentences in the headlines of Time magazine that needs to find the answer based on the statement of the problems.
In this analysis the researcher presents five types of associative meaning that is used in the headlines of “Time”, such as connotative meaning, stylistic meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, and collocative meaning. Besides, this analysis shows that the associative meaning is used by bringing the experience (mental understanding) and expressions of human thought and feeling or emotion of word in the headlines of Time magazine.
The results of this study show that there are five types of associative meaning and their use in those headlines of “Time” during April-May 2011. Each of the types shows the various forms of sentence and gives differing definitions based on the types talked about. In these periods, reflected meaning is often used compared to other meanings which are in the form of phrase, whereas collocative meaning is rarely used.
