Abstract

ABSTRACT

Hesitation is the act of silent period during speaking in spontaneous speech. Hesitation is interesting to be analyzed because hesitations almost happen in spontaneous speech especially when the speech used foreign language. This study analyzed the utterances of students speech in PGRI Nusantara Kediri, which is focuses in question and answer session. In this study found that hesitations consciously or unconsciously occurs in the utterances of student’s speech in PGRI Nusantara Kediri.

This study uses descriptive qualitative design. It means that this study describes the Hesitation in student’s speech of PGRI Nusantara Kediri University, which focuses on question and answer session. Qualitative method was used to analyze the types of hesitation. The data were collected by observing student’s speech in PGRI Nusantara Kediri. This study uses Maclay and Osgood theory

By the finding of data presented and analyzed at the previous chapter, it could be concluded that hesitation occurs in the utterances of English Education student in PGRI Nusantara Kediri University during question and answer session in the presentation. The hesitations are filled pause, unfilled pause, false start, and repeats. The dominant hesitation occurred is repeats and filled pause. At any rate, all of the four the types of hesitations are found in the data.

The common function or reasons of hesitation found in this study are first, people hesitate for taking of air. The second function is pragmatic reason. It means to know whether the listeners understand about the explanation or the listener is temporally unfocused, confused, or unwilling to listen. It pays to wait before going on. The third reason is linguistic planning. It means hesitation for deciding, searching, thinking the next word or utterance. The fourth function of hesitation is for making sure that what the presenters said is right. It is because the presenters read the paper during answering the question. The last function is considering the incorrectness in the end of speaking.
