Abstract
ABSTRACT
Communication between people from many different cultures and languages motivate people to learn the other languages. Thus, people learn about translation. In this study, the researcher analyzes the translation method of the idiomatic expressions found in the movie script. The researcher takes “Taxi movie” script as the data.
In this study, the researcher attempts to point out that translating idiomatic expressions in a movie, one has to take into consideration the choosing of the translation method. Choosing the translation method will influence the result, which is the subtitle.
The researcher uses qualitative method because the data is in the form of words. The researcher starts collecting the data by downloading the original movie script of Taxi. Then, the researcher writes the translation of the movie script, find some sentences that are considered to have idiomatic expressions needed for the analysis, and make arrangement for the chosen idiomatic expressions. The technique of the data analysis is classifying the type of translation method based on Newmark theory.
There are thirty one idiomatic expressions found in this movie. The anslysis shows that there are three methods which are applied in translating the idiomatic expressions found in this movie, they are idiomatic translation, free translation and communicative translation. There are twenty five idiomatic expressions which are translated using the idiomatic translation method. There are three idiomatic expressions which are translated using the free translation method. And, there are three idiomatic expressions translated using the communicative translation method. Therefore, it can be concluded that the translator of this movie has already had a good understanding of translating idiomatic expressions. There is no misinterpretation of translating the idiomatic expressions in this movie.
