Abstract
ABSTRACT
Presupposition is what a speaker (or writer) assumes is true or known by a listener (or reader). When someone says something (makes an utterance), the meaning of that sentence has to do with the words, etc., but the meaning only exists within the context of what else is in the person's head that provides meaning. While Inference is the additional information to make a connection between what is said and what must be meant.
This research focuses on analyzing the utterances by using theory of Presupposition and Inference proposed by George Yule. This research aims to identify the types of presupposition and inference that is found in “That’s what I am” movie, and discover how the presupposition and inference are used in.
The method which is used in this research is descriptive qualitative method because the data are in the form of words or utterances rather than number. In addition, the data were described descriptively based on Yule theory of presupposition and inference. This method was selected since the correct result from analyzing the data should be gained.
The result of this research reveals some findings covering the formulated research problems. First, the presupposition in this “That’s what I am” movie can be categorized as the five from six types of presupposition means that mostly the characters in this movie are using presupposition in their communication. They like to shorten what they say using presupposition. It is the same with the inference, only two from three types of inference used by the characters in that movie. Hence, presupposition and inference are still important to reach the success communication between speaker and listener in the understanding the intend meaning behind the utterance.
Finally, the researcher suggests to the next researchers who are interested in doing research in the same area to make this research be more complete analysis and look for the other unique conversation in the other situation to give something new.
