Abstract

ABSTRACT

In the process of communication, the style is an urgent case. It can bring the message which will be delivered by the participants. The speaker does not need to state the message directly inside of communication. In this way, both the speaker and the listener are able to choose the right style they expect it. Furthermore, it also attempts to establish principles capable of explaining the particular choices made by individuals and social groups in their use of language, such as socialisation.

This research is focused on the speech style spoken by multilingual speakers in Pesantren Putri Al-Mawaddah Ponorogo. It is very important since everyone does not always speak in similar way. It is possible they use different style in different circumstances.

The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method because the researcher wants to get an obvious description of the words and utterances, which are used in different circumstances. Therefore, the data are in the form of words and utterances, not in the form of number. After the data were collected, they were presented and analyzed based on the characteristic patterns of the style and the circumstances they were used.

The researcher found several speech styles which are used by the multilingual speakers in Pesantren Putri Al-Mawaddah Ponorogo. There are: lexical or diction patterns, there are many words which are applied for addressing and greeting. In conversation grammar, multilingual speakers mostly apply phrases. The circumstances are also various, they used it in relax conversation, joke, seriousness, speech, and announcement.

So, the study implies that the multilingual speakers in Pesantren Putri Al-Mawaddah Ponorogo mostly used terms such as “sister” and “hai” for addressing and greeting in lexical or diction patterns and in conversation grammar patterns.
