Abstract
ABSTRACT
The choice on analyzing this fiction is; the first, based on the difficulties of the challenge when analyzing it because of the allusion on the implicit part of novel. Second; based on the fact that not interested in literary works especially English novel. The last is that the researcher wants to build up and rise up the habit of reading novel. Reading a novel is very advantageous. People can get a better view of thing that happens in peoples’ mind. In a fiction, the reader can find explorations of human behaviors. These things can educate them and enable the readers to know the way to cope and understand other people’s thoughts.
This study focused on the investigation of the kinds of sentential meanings and messages found in “Mates, Dates, and Mad Mistakes” novel by Cathy Hopkins. It is considered very powerful, and it contains so many valuable lessons of life. This fiction describes about the teenager’s problems and their delinquency for getting their self identity. In such a way makes this fiction becomes beautiful and full of color.
This study is descriptive qualitative research because it did not deal with number at all. The data are taken from the novel. To get the data, the researcher used the following steps. First, she tries to obtain the novel used as data sources namely “Mates, Dates, and Mad Mistakes” by Cathy Hopkins. Then she reads the novel again and again until she understood the meanings and the messages involved in that novel. Next, the researcher makes record the data obtained from the data sources that are relevant to the statements of the problems. And the last she arranges the data systematically in accordance to the research problems. The problems of this study were formulated on two questions, first; what are the kinds of sentential meanings used in “Mates, Dates, and Mad Mistakes” novel by Cathy Hopkins? And the second; what messages are found in that novel?
The results of this study show that there are four kinds of sentential meanings involved in “Mates, Dates, and Mad Mistakes” novel, namely; analytic sentences, synthetic sentences, entailment and presupposition. From the data, the researcher also found the moral, religious, and social messages in the novel.
