Abstract
ABSTRACT
Errors are parts of learnings. No one can avoid it when they are in the process of learning. Errors are defined as the unsuccessfulness of the speaker or writer in producing language. This study investigates the errors in “Cendekia” English Handbooks for Elementary Schools. This study is very important to be conducted because “Cendekia” English handbooks for elementary schools are distributed to all elementary schools in Malang and are used by many elementary schools in Malang. Since the handbooks are used as the material sources for elementary school students, the handbooks should be written correctly based on the Standard English.
This study aims to answer the question: “What are the types of errors found in “Cendekia” English Handbooks for Elementary Schools?”. This study uses descriptive qualitative design because the purpose of this study is to describe, understand, and explore the errors found in “Cendekia” English Handbooks for Elementary Schools. The data of this study are taken from “Cendekia” English Handbooks for Elementary Schools second semester year 2012/2013. The data are taken from six handbooks, handbooks from the first to the sixth grade. The data are collected by reading, understanding the handbooks, and identifying the words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and texts which indicate errors. Then, the data which indicate errors are classified, the errors are described, explained, and discussed before the findings are finally concluded.
The findings indicate that, the types of errors found in “Cendekia” English Handbooks for Elementary Schools are omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The errors of misformation also occur in constructing paragraph and text in the handbooks. Then, based on the analysis, the errors are classified into omission, addition, misformation, misordering, and coherence error. Finally, I suggest to the future researchers who are interested in this topic to conduct the research on the errors which are produced by teachers in the process of teaching and learning at class, and use other theories, such as Mary Laine Yarber and Robert E Yarber for analyzing the data.
