Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study is aimed to investigate code switching used by English teachers in the teaching of English at SMA RSBI Negeri 1 Batu. SMA Negeri 1 Batu is a public senior high school located in Batu, which has become a Pioneering International Standard School (RSBI). There are three problems in this study, namely: the types of code switching used by the research subjects in the teaching and learning of English at SMA RSBI Negeri 1 Batu, the functions of code switching used by the research subjects in the teaching and learning of English at SMA RSBI Negeri 1 Batu, and the reasons for the use of code switching by the research subjects.
This study uses descriptive qualitative method that emphasizes on the natural language in utterances used by the two English teachers by using sociolinguistics approaches to analyze the code switching occurs while teaching and learning process happened. Therefore, it is interesting to observe this phenomenon in order to find out the types, functions, and the reasons of code switching. The data are in sentences which collecting by observing the two English teachers when they are teaching their students in the class and also doing interview to them.
The result of this study shows that there are two types of code switching found in the teaching and learning process in the classroom at SMA RSBI Negeri 1 Batu used by the two English teachers. They are inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching which involvea word between sentences, a noun phrase, a verb phrase, and intra-lexical code switching. There are three functions of code switching found in the teaching of English at SMA RSBI Negeri 1 Batu used by the two English teachers. Those are unmarked code switching, marked code switching and exploratory. Besides, there are four reasons for the use of code switching by the two English teachers, namely making an interjection, clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, repetition used for clarification, telling the student for doing something. The researcher found three probable reason of code switching used by the two English teachers those are, making jokes, translating words, and showing disappointment. In addition, the researcher takes one general reasons, namely considering the efficiency of time.
By the conclusion of this study, this study suggests to the students of linguistics to think more critically about code switching phenomenon which occurs in other situations. Besides, it is expected for the future researchers to conduct their observation in more various contexts so that they can enrich more information about code switching and some other phenomena.
