Abstract
ABSTRACT
Discrimination is treatment taken toward or against an individual of a certain group in consideration based solely on class or category. Discrimination can be seen when the people employs someone, how they accept the student in the school, how they rent a house, choosing partner, and in the many other situations. There are many kinds of discrimination that are gender discrimination, race discrimination, sex discrimination. Based on the reason, the researcher chooses the title “Discrimination against Japanese-American during World War II in Danielle Steel’s Silent Honor” because this novel tells about discrimination suffered by Japanese-American. Because of that, the researcher formulates three problems of study in this research, they are 1) What are the forms of discrimination in Danielle Steel’s Silent Honor? 2) What are the responds of Takeo’s family members as Japanese-American towards the discrimination against them described in Danielle Steel’s Silent Honor? 3) How is discrimination faced by Japanese-Americans in California during World War II era reflected in Danielle Steel’s Silent Honor?
Here, the researcher doing analysis, interpretation, and evaluation in conducting the research however it categorized as literary criticism. The researcher used sociological approach as research design to analyze because it has correlation with human being and viewed as the appropriate approach to do this research. As it is known that sociological approach is one kind of literary criticism which studies the novel and social background of the society that reflected in the novel.
From this research, the results that can be stated are there are, First, discrimination in Danielle Steel’s Silent Honor has four forms, they are (1) discrimination in political aspect, (2) discrimination in sociological aspect (3) discrimination in economical aspect, (4) discrimination in educational aspect. Second, there are some of responds of the characters in Danielle Steel’s Silent Honor towards the discrimination against them. Third, discrimination faced by Japanese-Americans in California during World War II era reflected in Danielle Steel’s Silent Honor by some incidents that told in the novel and really happened in the real history in America.
