Abstract
ABSTRACT
Style is an integral part of social functioning that interaction cannot go ahead if someone does not speak with the right style. People can not avoid style in communication. It means that in communication we should use the right style to get good understanding and the interaction will go ahead. Different situation will require different styles. Therefore, the researcher chooses rhetorical and figurative styles used in Othello play.
The objectives of this study are to describe and to indentify how the rhetorical and figurative styles used in Othello play. This study is descriptive qualitative since the data are collected and analyzed in the form of words rather than numerical scores or statistics. The primary data source is play script of “Othello” play because it is one of Shakespeare’s work and Othello regarded as Shakespeare’s greatest play. The secondary data source from a book “an introduction to literature tenth edition”.
The data collection of this study described as follow. First, reading the Othello from each scene of the play several times to get a complete understanding. Second, selecting some utterances which are assumed to contain rhetorical and figurative style. Third, classify the utterances into rhetorical and figurative styles. The last is analyzing the data by classifying the data into theory of rhetorical and figurative styles. Second, analyzing the data based on theory of rhetorical and figurative styles. Third, discussing the data based on the characteristics of rhetorical and figurative styles theory and the last is drawing conclusion.
After analyzing the data, the researcher shows that the main characters use both of rhetorical style and figurative style theory. The rhetorical style used by the main characters are, alliteration, assonance, apostrophe, asyndeton, polysyndeton, pleonasm, hyperbole, paradox, and oxymoron. There are five rhetorical styles used by the main characters of Othello play. They are simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, and antonomasia. The researcher finds that the dominant style used by the main characters in rhetorical style are alliteration and pleonasm while in figurative style the dominant style is metaphor.
Based on the findings of this study, the researcher hopes this study gives contributions to the researcher herself and the readers. Rhetorical and figurative styles not only applied in messages, rhetorical and figurative styles also used in daily conversation in order the messages more interesting to be listened. The future researchers are also suggested to analyze other elements related to language style, such as language style based on the diction, based on the tone, or based on the sentence structure. The next researcher is also recommended to use other theories of rhetorical and figurative styles to enrich the theory of rhetorical and figurative styles, such as rhetorical and figurative style based on Reaske’s theory.
