Word-choice of headline news on Muslim issues used in The Jakarta Post

ABSTRACT

The news paper is one of kinds of mass media used to inform and grow the image which is consciously produced by the journalist to influence the socio- cognitive of the society to give claim that this is right or wrong. Here, the researcher used Van Dijk’s theory which emphasizing on socio-cognitive approach, it means that how the journalist consciously produces the text to bring the readers follow to the journalist understanding or believe. The researcher puts the research on micro structure in the level of lexicon. The analysis on the level of lexicon is classified into for types namely lexicon used to create classification, lexicon used to limit view, lexicon used to have clash discourse, and lexicon used to marginalize.

The news paper is analyzed using the descriptive qualitative approach in finding and analyzing discourses, it is qualitative because the design is to obtain the information concerning with the phenomena and it is used to explore the problem. They are directed toward determining the nature of situation, as it existed at the time of the study and descriptive because it produces descriptive knowledge of investigating and analyzing thoroughly certain phenomena of language. For this research, the researcher took the data from the 1st to 7th of January 2009. It is because in those dates were the highest conflict between both of sides, so that the data were appropriate to be analysis. For this research, the researcher explains the step of analysis namely first, the researcher started by classifying the topic, the researcher takes the data especially on the conflict between Palestine and Israel issue, the second the researcher looks for the classification of the words based on Van Dijk’s model of the classification in the level lexicon, after finding the classification of the word, finally the researcher interprets the aim of the journalist choosing the word itself.

Finally, the researcher suggests to the next researcher concerning in the similar topic to analyze word-choice from discourse analysis it is to make larger area of research, the discourse is not only understood in the level of lexicon, so that here the researcher rather difficult to decide the classification of the word.
