The translation of Cohesion in Andrea Hirata Novel Laskar Pelangi and its translation into English

ABSTRACT

Cohesion is one of the aspects that is taken into consideration in the translations. Every language has its own devices for establishing cohesive link. The particular device which is used, and even the ways in which they are used, will vary from language to language. Thus, the researcher studies about cohesion in translation field. The researcher takes novel Laskar Pelangi written by Andrea Hirata, which has translated into English.

In this study, the researcher attempts to point out the procedures are applied by translator in translating Indonesian cohesive device from Laskar Pelangi into English Rainbow Troops.

The researcher uses qualitative method because the data is in the form of words, phrase, clause, and sentence. The researcher starts collecting the data by reading both novel, original and its translation. Then, the researcher writes down some case involving cohesive device, and classified them into each device. Finally, the researcher determines the procedures of translation.

There are ten types of procedures are applied in translating cohesive device. They involve single procedure and double procedures such as; transposition-reduction, transposition-expansion, and transposition-synonym. Then, the most frequent procedure is applied in translating Indonesian cohesive device is transposition, which is found in forty four cases. Then, the rest, such as literal is found in thirty two cases, synonym in one case, paraphrase in ten cases, reduction in one case, expansion in five cases, culture equivalent in one case, transposition-reduction in four cases, transposition-expansion in three cases and transposition-synonym in one case. The, all procedures applied are appropriate. Moreover, this study also shows that between two different languages select different cohesive device in the same linguistic situation.

Finally, to reach richest knowledge of cohesion concept in both different languages, the researcher suggests to the next researchers to do same research by examining not only one literature but more than it. Besides, this study did not cover everything in this novel, so the next researcher also suggested to do research in this novel, such as the translation of idiomatic expression, cultural bound word or pragmatic equivalence analysis.
