Abstract
ABSTRACT
Lexical meaning is the realisation of concept or emotion by means of defined language system. There are many ways that can be used to analyze the text one of them is lexical analysis. It used to get easier in understanding about meaning. Meaning can defines as the situation in which the word is uttered. Meaning is also found on lyrics. Lyrics are the most important part in the song. A good song should have good lyrics. Lyrics is related with the composer tell about. In literature, of course, it is written in figurative language. Figurative language can be found in the lyrics of song.
To understand the lyrics, we have to determine the speakers who produce the utterances and the speaker’s or writer’s position in space and time. Based on the background, this research is conducted to investigate what kinds of lexcical meaning implied on the lyrics of Avril Lavigne’s Goodbye Lullaby Album.
In analyzing these lyrics, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative design since the data are in the form of words rather than numbers. The researcher used the lyrics of avril lavigne songs as the relevant source of data. Avril Lavigne is a young talented singer. By reading and understanding the data, the researcher selects and categorize the data which are related to the problems of study, analyzing the categorized data and make conclusion.
There are several steps to analyze the data. First of all the researcher identifies the data, thus only the required data are quoted and analyzed based on the type of meaning. Then, the researcher makes conclusion from the results of analysis to find out the answers of the research problem.
The results of the study show that there are many lexical meanings found, they are; synonymy, antonymy, denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and polysemy. This research, found that there is positive and negative connotative. The positives connotative meanings are mostly used by Avril because the sentences and utterances are constructed for daily expressions. The connotative meanings are dominant because the lyrics of Avril’s song are mostly written in the figurative language.
