Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research focuses on analyzing comprehension disorders of the schizophrenic character in Canvas movie. Comprehension disorders are a language disability which causes impairment of both the understanding and the expression of language. There are twelve types of comprehension disorders. And schizophrenia is one of diseases which are characterized by comprehension disorders. Schizophrenia is a brain disease resulting in persistent and serious psychotic behavior, concrete thinking, and difficulty in processing information, interpersonal relationships, and difficulty in solving problems. This disease often suffers terrifying symptoms such as hallucination and delusion. The researcher is interested in schizophrenia due to the uniqueness of the language of schizophrenic and the phenomena which follow.
The aim of this research is to identify and describe the kinds of schizophrenic’s comprehension disorders and contexts which are used by Mary as the schizophrenic character in Canvas movie through her utterances. Then, this research uses qualitative descriptive method since this research attempts to obtain deeper understanding about the process and meaning of comprehension disorders that are expressed by Mary as schizophrenic character in Canvas movie through her words or utterances in several settings such as in her house, mental hospital, and cake shop. The data are analyzed firstly by explaining the setting. Secondly, the researcher explains the phenomenon of comprehension disorder which happens by showing the utterances of Mary. Thirdly, the researcher classifies and analyzes the data based on Ginsberg (1985) theory about the types of comprehension disorders. Fourthly, the researcher explains the contexts which follow the appearance of comprehension disorders. Fifthly, the researcher discusses based on the result of the findings of the data analysis and based on the related theories. Sixthly, the researcher concludes the phenomena based on the research problems by showing the whole number and type of data that are found.
The findings of this research show that there are four types of comprehension disorders which are made by Mary those are; derailment, retardation, perseveration, and pressure of speech. Then the contexts that are expressed those are hallucination, delusion, paranoid, affective flattening, and the disorganized speech. Whereas the hallucination and delusion which almost influence Mary in producing comprehension disorders. In conclusion, Mary has good enough in language comprehension due to she can understand what other speaker said and quite well in communication. Moreover, the utterances of Mary are closed to normal and not quite haphazardly.
The researcher hopes that this research can give a new contribution to the readers, especially the students who are interested in the same field. Moreover, this research expected to give information and understanding about the language characteristics of schizophrenic.
