An Analysis of Politeness Strategies used in Pride and Prejudice movie

ABSTRACT

In their daily life, people need to use the strategy of politeness to make a harmony when they interact with others in order to achieve their wants and goals by maintaining other’s face. In other words, by using politeness strategies, the speaker tries to keep his or her manners or behaviors and his or her language not to hurt other people’s feeling. The politeness phenomena itself also appears in the dialogues of movie among the characters. Therefore, the writer intends to investigate the politeness strategy used in Pride and Prejudice movie.

This study is aimed at finding the use of politeness strategies in Pride and Prejudice movie. Moreover, this study is designed to identify kinds of politeness strategies and to describe how the politeness strategies are used by the characters of Pride and Prejudice movie.

This study is descriptive qualitative since the data were collected, analyzed, and described in the form of words rather than numerical statistics. The study is descriptive because it describes the politeness phenomena used in Pride and Prejudice Movie. The data of this study are in the forms of utterances which contains politeness strategies. The data source in this study is the transcript of Pride and Prejudice movie which is downloaded from the internet.

The research result shows that the characters of Pride and Prejudice movie use two kinds of politeness strategies proposed by Scollon and Scollon. They are Involvement and independence strategy. The characters use involvement strategies when they want to show the closeness to the hearer. The involvement strategy used are paying attention to the hearer, exaggerate, claim common point of view and opinion, to be optimistic, assume or assert reciprocity, the use of nickname, and to be voluble or speaking a lot. Meanwhile, the characters use independence strategy when they prone to respect the hearer. The independence strategy used are apology, to be pessimistic, and the use of family name and title. The politeness strategy which is the most frequently used by the characters of the movie is independence strategy, that is the use of family name and title.

This study is expected to the next researcher to conduct a research on politeness strategies in the other forms of object of the study, in order to expand the area of investigation. Besides, the next researcher can use the other theories of politeness strategies, such as Lakoff’s and Leech’s theory of politeness strategy.
