Abstract

ABSTRACT

The researcher is interested in analyzing silent pauses in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” movie. This research focuses on the functions of silence using Grace’s theory and also the contexts that occur within the silence when it is used by the characters in this movie. This research is also expected to give contribution toward the Psycholinguistic study especially in the development of silence pause.

Descriptive qualitative method is used in this research as it concerns with the description of the functions of silence pause used by the characters in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” movie and the contexts where the silence is used. The design requires the utterances where the silence happens. In order to obtain the valid data, the movie is watched several times. The contexts are also observed while crosschecking with the script of the movie. A checking list of the data analysis is made in this study to make the analysis of the data is easier.

This research found that in the conversational interaction done by the characters in this movie, all of the functions of silence are used. The dominant function of silence that is used is to show disapproval. Whereas, indifference and malice/contempt/jealousy are the functions that are least used by the characters. The characters use these functions of silence to express their emotion or feeling. And the way how the writer gives the role to the characters has influence on the emerging of this function, whether it emerges most or least.

Based on the result of this research, the researcher suggests the use of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” movie to be the object of the researcher especially in silent pauses because this movie is a good example for it provides the data of silent pauses. In addition, if we want to learn more about silent pauses concerning with its functions, we can use this movie because it also provides the contexts that we can study to find out the functions of silence.
