Abstract

ABSTRACT

This research focuses on the use of cohesion used in I♥ Indonesia articles. Cohesion is a part of the systems of a language which is expressed partly through grammar and partly through vocabulary. The reason for taking “I ♥ Indonesia” article is because this article tells about Indonesia, its content is accurate, precise and efficient and the reader is easy to understand it. The use of cohesion in this article will help the reader get the meaning of the article easily. This study examines the types and the function of cohesion in “I♥ Indonesia” article in High End Teen magazine.

This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data sources of this study are the articles of High End Teen magazine taken from January until March 2011 consisting of three articles and every article consists of three subtitles. All of the articles are analyzed based on Halliday & Hasan’s (1976) theory of cohesion.

This research finds that grammatical cohesion reference occurs in almost every article, fewer examples of conjunction and ellipsis are also found. The function of grammatical cohesion reference is to indicate reference pronoun. The function of conjunction is to indicate additional fact or idea. In term of lexical cohesion, examples of repetition are found, followed by an example of hyponym data. The function of repetition is to give confirmative explanation about something and the function of hyponym is to indicate the categories of something.

The results of the research are helpful for future researcher in order to investigate cohesion from another perspective or by using another theory such as Martin’s Lexical cohesion theory.
