Abstract
ABSTRACT
Public speaking is the process and act of speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain a listening audience. Public speaking is commonly understood as face-to-face speaking between individuals and an audience for the purpose of communication.
Argumentation is a type of rhetoric that is to persuade attitude and others’ opinion, in order to believe and do as the speaker said (Keraf, 2007). “It is fact of life, you likely engage in argumentation on a daily basis” Hill and Leeman (1996) say. In most basic sense, argumentation is the communicative process in which individuals present and test reasons supporting points of view.
The focus of this study is investigating the formulation of argumentative elements of the presenters in the komunitas alumni muda Indonesia (KAMI) service project competition and conference in @atamerica, Jakarta 2012. And it uses qualitative descriptive method because the purpose of this research is to analyze the transcript of the presenters descriptively. Moleong (2005:4) states that qualitative method is the research procedure which results in descriptive data including written and oral words from the object of the study.
The researcher finds that each group wants to explain to the audiences why their projects are very useful and important by giving a good argumentation. The presenters give more data to support their claim, and warrant to connect between the data and the claim. It makes the claim straighten in the statement. In addition, the presenters of the first, the second, and the third group winner formulate their statements with claim, warrant, rebuttal, qualifier, backing, and data. The six elements of Toulmin’s argumentative features are used by the presenters.
