Abstract

ABSTRACT

Metaphor is the way of conveying ideas which is used by the speakers to persuade and convince the listeners through the use of conceptual metaphor. To capture this view of metaphor, the speakers need to comprehend metaphor through conceptual domains. Conceptual metaphor is one of the ways to understand metaphor through conceptual domains by structuring one conceptual domain in terms of another one.

This study investigates the conceptual metaphor used by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at international event. The researcher needs to answer the conceptual metaphor used by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in his keynote address. The researcher selects the speech as the object of the study because it certainly contains eight conceptual metaphors. The researcher wants to explore the conceptual metaphor of the keynote address based on Lakoff and Johnson's theory.

This research uses descriptive qualitative approach. The researcher describes and explains the conceptual metaphor employed by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on his keynote address in the 5th Islamic Economic Forum. The researcher uses three steps in analyzing the data. First, the researcher classifies the data associating with the theory. Second, the researcher analyzes the data by using the theory of conceptual metaphor. Third, the researcher discusses and interprets the data concerning the conceptual metaphor. Finally, the researcher concludes the result of the analysis on conceptual metaphor.

Based on this research, the researcher concludes that Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s keynote address employs eight conceptual metaphors, those are: (1) State as Person, (2) States are Location, (3) The world as Community (4) Social Organizations are People (5) Politic is War, (6) Job is Liquid, and (7) Crisis as Ghost, and (8) More is Up, Less is Down. The analysis showed that he used metaphors to activate the emotion of the listener and to convince the audience about his future plans.

Therefore, the researcher suggests to all of the speakers to convey metaphorical expressions in the right ways in order to convince the audiences; because the audiences will believe in what speakers say.
