Abstract
ABSTRACT
Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is a paradigm concerns on studying the way social power abuse, dominance and inequality within a social or political frame. It is always interesting to investigate the influential religious leaders’ ideological stance in his scholarly speech. This study is framed with scholarly discourse, since it is produced by an Islamic scholar both in social and academic context. Thus, the language in such phenomena enables the speaker to control over other people’s ideology. This thesis is an attempt of answering the research problems; what are the strategies and functions of discursive ideological construction on words, phrases, and sentence structures used by Hamza Yusuf?
To answer those problems, the researcher adopts CDA approach introduced by Teun A. van Dijk about the analysis of macro and microstructure perspective to describe types and function of discursive strategies of ideological construction by focusing the analysis on the words, phrases, and sentences structure. Methodologically, the researcher employs descriptive qualitative method for his research design. The data are further analyzed by intensive reading to find out the aspects of ideological construction from a speech that produces the Islamic scholarly agendas.
The findings reveal that the analysis at the micro-level structure construed by their macro topics and contexts, have sustained Hamza Yusuf’s legitimate and illegitimate expressions. The implementation of such strategies have enabled Hamza Yusuf to illegitimize the acts and perspective of extremism among the Islamic fundamental groups, the western prejudice against Islam and to legitimize their cultural influence as the triggering cause of the Muslims’ extreme attitudes. To succeed in legitimizing his interests, he has consequently created domination, discrimination, and downgrading sense to the out-group’s ideology and attitudes in his discourse. The micro discursive strategies are further described as; the words structure strategies involve the pronouns selection, generalization, categorization, and words intensifiers. On the phrasal structure strategies involve the noun phrase, adjective phrase, verb phrase, and the prepositional phrase. And on the sentential structure strategies involve the active voicing sentence, self- sufficient sentence, rhetorical question sentences, and the parallel sentences.
Based on the findings results, it is suggested to the next researcher to limit this study by focusing deeply only one of both linguistics aspects of rhetorical and syntactical, and also, to be more concern on the use of the prepositional phrase. Finally, this study stimulates further research to be undertaken in areas beyond the aspects of speeches, such as articles, and newspapers inquiries.
