Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research focuses on instrumental aggression and the response of the victims towards instrumental aggression reflected on the novel Jane Eyre. Instrumental aggression is faced by many characters in every event in the novel. Almost all of the characters that appear in the novel get the instrumental aggression behavior, and all of the characters that get the instrumental aggression behavior are mostly children. And something become interesting in this research is about the characters that get the instrumental aggression in different ways. Jane Eyre as the main character gets the instrumental aggression behavior more often than others, she always appear in every setting on the novel in bad condition and always gets the unfair treatment from the people around her.
On the other hand, the victim respond towards instrumental aggression behavior is in various ways. The respond are in the form of resistance, such as the striking, abusing, mocking, insulting, and grasping. Sometime the victim response is in expression, such as silent without speaking. Response of the victim towards instrumental aggression is found in great numbers. Almost every characters who gets the instrumental aggression behavior responses to that action. Jane Eyre as the main character always responses in any time she gets the instrumental aggression. Sometimes, she responds the instrumental aggression with striking back the people who does the instrumental aggression to her. Sometimes, she responds towards instrumental aggression with mocking and insulting. And also the other characters almost do the same respond as Jane Eyre does.
All of analysis of this research uses the psychological approach, specifically instrumental aggression theory. Psychological approach is as the theory to analyze the phenomenon based on the theme and research question. After analyzing this novel using the instrumental aggression theory the researcher has the result of analysis that instrumental aggression behavior is found in great number and done by many characters. Meanwhile, the victim responds toward instrumental aggression behavior is appearing in many ways. The responds are in the form of resistance, such as the striking, abusing, mocking, insulting, and grasping.
