The suspenseful plot in Patricia Cornwell’s Blow Fly as a detective novel

ABSTRACT

Literature is very interesting. Reading and discussing the literary work is enjoyable and can give advantages, for instance increasing our knowledge. One of the literary works is novel. It can draw and influence the readers into their imaginative world and engage them with the power of their invention. Moreover, we not only read the novel, but also analyze it; we of course will get more. Analyzing novel can give us better understanding. And, in this case the researcher is interested in the detective novel Blow Fly by Patricia Cornwell. The researcher chooses this novel because when he reads for the first time, he directly interested in it, particularly the plot. More specifically, the researcher assumes that this novel is full of suspense, because when reading it, he often feels suspense. Finally, the researcher focuses on the structure and laws of plot, especially the suspense and the effect of them to the detective novel.

The researcher decides to conduct this study is because of some reasons. By this research, the researcher wants to inquire knowledge about the plot in Blow Fly as a detective novel. He also wants to know what actually the relationship between the suspenseful plot and detective novel. And the researcher considers that Blow Fly is the good and interesting novel and appropriate to be analyzed by concerning on the plot. Therefore the researcher conducts the research entitled The Suspenseful Plot in Patricia Cornwell‟s “Blow Fly” as A Detective Novel. This study is aimed to at answering three following problem statements; the first is “what the structure of plot is revealed in Blow Fly as a detective novel”, secondly “what suspense is found in Blow Fly”, and the last one is “what the effect of suspenseful plot on the wholeness or the unity of Blow Fly as a detective novel.”

In this study, the researcher applies the structuralism approach. This approach is chosen because it is a literary approach which just focuses on the literary work with ignoring the external elements. The researcher considers that it is the appropriate literary approach to analyze the plot of novel, and also the wholeness of Blow Fly as a detective novel.

From this study, the researcher finds some results. The structure of plot is good enough. It is developed by the author well and completely. The laws of plot in Blow Fly really appear and support each others. The researcher found so much suspense while reading it. Even almost all events of Blow Fly is covered and colored by the suspense. And, the existence of the suspenseful plot extremely influenced the wholeness or the unity of Blow Fly as a detective novel. The suspenseful plot is so significant to the detective novel. Therefore, this detective novel has good unity.
