Abstract
ABSTRACT
Discrimination is an event that is often found in the society, caused by the human being inclination to discriminate the other. Discrimination is treating people not same with other people. In which this treatment is made based onthe characteristic which has been representated by that people. The upper class society discriminates the lower class by treating them unfairly.
Relating to the phenomenon above, this study is aimed to explainthediscrimination experienced by the lower class society in India described in the novel Q and A, the lower class societies struggle against the discrimination described in the novel Q and A and the discrimination happened in the novel as reflection of the real condition in India.
This research is a literary criticism using Marxist sociological literary criticism. Marxist literary criticism is a type of criticism in which literary works are viewed as the product of work and whose practitioners emphasize the role of classand ideology as they reflectpropagate, andeven challenge the prevailing social order. Rather than viewing text as repositories for hidden meanings, Marxist critics view teks as material product to be understoodin broadly historicalterm .In short, literary work are viewed as a product of works.(and hence of the realm of production and consumption we call economics).
After analyzing the data, the researcher finds first, there are two kinds of discrimination based on the novel Q and Amainly: 1) Status discrimination, it is treating someone unfairly because of their status in the society. The people who has the higher structure in the society, they got privilege in the higher structure in the society as compared to the people who has the lower status and 2) Sexual/Gender discrimination, Sex discrimination involves treating someone unfavorably because of that person‟s sex as happen to Nita, she is forced by her brother to be prostitute in helping her family earning money.Second the lower class struggle against the discriminationby using their action such as ram‟s denying that he cheat on quiz program. He can answer all of the question because of his experience of life and the third, the story in the novel reflects the real condition in India.
