A Syntactic Structures Analysis of English sentences used in Westlife’s song lyrics

ABSTRACT

Talking about syntax study, it means we are talking about how the sentence is constructed. The sentence or the utterance could be used in written and spoken way. We can know the form of the sentence whether the sentence is grammatically correct or not. Having the analysis about the grammatical rule is importance in order to get clear understanding on the meaning of the sentence.

This research uses syntax study as the theme. This study used to examine The English Sentences that are taken from song’s lyrics of Westlife’s album. The researcher uses that object as the data because she wants to know what kinds of syntactical structures that are appeared in the song lyrics. In addition, she also wants to know about the grammatical rules of the sentence used in the song lyrics.

The researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method because the data are in the form of words rather in numbers and statistics. In addition, this method used in order to get clear description and deeply understanding of the result.

As the result, the researcher found that there are four kinds of syntactical structures used in the three songs’ lyrics of Westlife album. The most frequently structure that is appeared is the structure of modification. On the other hand, the structure that less appeared is the structure of complementation and the structure of coordination. Beside that, according to the data analysis, most of the sentences in the three songs’ lyrics are in the complete sentences because those sentences follow the grammatical rules. The using of Noun Phrases have followed the rules.

Finally, the researcher really hopes that this thesis will be useful for many people who read it, especially for the next researcher who is interested in doing the same research, but in the different object or part of syntax study. Normally, for anybody who wants to know and learn more about language application.
