Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literary works bring us to the world of dreams and imaginations and it take us away from reality. In literature, writers sometimes express the idea of motivation. People need motivation of their life for creating their life. Motivation is needed in human life, because with the motivation men are more enthusiastic to reach their life goals.
Related to the explanation above, it is interesting in conducting a psychological analysis on “William Minor’s motivation as a Volunteer in Making Oxford English Dictionary Reflected in Simon Winchester’s The Professor and the Madman”.
The statement of the problem is “What are the motivations of William Minor in Simon Winchester’s The Professor and the Madman based on David McClelland’s theory of motivation?”
The researcher used achievement motivation theory of needs by David McClelland. The theory is suitable to be used in this research, because this research described motivation of the main character on novel “The Professor and the Madman”. The theory of achievement motivation by David McClelland consists of Need for Achievement, Need for Affiliation, and Need for Power.
The methodologically the researcher applies a literary criticism and uses psychological approach to deal with the data. Literary criticism is the study, discussion, evaluation, and interpretation of literature. This study uses psychological approach because in this study, the analysis is focused on studying the psychological condition of the main character in the novel “The Professor and the Madman” by Simon Winchester. The present study analyzes the novel from the psychological aspect dealing with theory of achievement motivation by David McClelland.
In conclusion it is found that the motivation of the main character is fluctuating. He needs motivation to cure his illness, by doing some activities like painting and playing flute. He spent his boring life in the asylum with his monomaniac. He reads a lot of books and becomes a volunteer in making Oxford English Dictionary. He is a great and brilliant contributor of the greatest dictionary, viewed from achievement motivation theory of needs Minor has fulfilled needs theory of human needs. He has Need for Achievement and Need for Affiliation to cure his suffer and has a good relationship with the other normal peoples. In additional he has need for power to get the equality of his condition as a monomaniac, not for the authority and he wanted the confession that he was same with the other peoples outside of Broadmoor asylum.

Karya sastra membawa kita pada dunia mimpi dan imajinasi, serta membawa kita pergi jauh dari kenyataan hidup. Dalam literatur, para penulis kadang mengekspresikan ide-ide motivasinya. Manusia membutuhkan motivasi dalam hidup mereka untuk menciptakan kehidupan mereka. Motivasi dibutuhkan dalam kehidupan manusia karena dengan motivasi manusia akan lebih antusias untuk meraih tujuan hidup mereka.
Berhubungan dengan penjelasam di atas, ini menarik untuk melakukan sebuah analisis psikologi pada “William Minor’s Motivation as a Volunteer in Making Oxford English Dictionary Reflected in Simon Winchester’s The Professor and the Madman”.
Rumusan masalahnya adalah “Apa motivasi-motivasi yang dimiliki oleh William Minor dalam The Professor and the Madman oleh Simon Winchester menurut teori motivasi David McClelland?”
Penulis menggunakan teori kebutuhan motivasi prestasi dari David
McClelland. Teori ini cocok untuk digunakan dalam penelitian ini, karena penelitian ini mendiskripsikan tentang motivasi dari tokoh utama dalam novel “The Professor and the Madman”. Teori motivasi prestasi dari David McClelland terdiri dari Kebutuhan untuk Berprestasi, Kebutuhan untuk Berafiliasi/Bersahabat, dan Kebutuhan untuk Berkuasa.
Secara metodologi penulis menerapkan kritik sastra dan menggunakan pendekatan psikologi untuk menguraikan data. Kritik sastra adalah suatu pembelajaran, diskusi, penaksiran, dan penafsiran sastra. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan psikologi, karena dalam penelitian ini analisisnya difokuskan pada penelitian kondisi psikologi tokoh utama dalam novel “The Professor and the Madman” oleh Simon Winchester. Sekarang ini analisis penelitian novel dari segi aspek psikologi dihubungkan dengan teori motivasi prestasi dari David McClelland.
Pada kesimpulan ditemukan bahwa motivasi tokoh utama berubah-ubah. Dia membutuhkan motivasi untuk menyembuhkan penyakitnya dengan melakukan beberapa aktifitas seperti melukis dan bermain seruling. Dia menghabiskan waktunya yang membosankan di Rumah Sakit Jiwa dengan penyakit monomanianya. Dia telah membaca banyak buku dan telah menjadi relawan dalam pembuatan kamus Oxford. Dia merupakan kontributor hebat dan cerdas dalam pembuatan kamus terhebat. Dilihat dari teori kebutuhan motivasi prestasi, Minor telah memenuhi kebutuhan- kebutuhan teori dari kebutuhan manusia. Dia telah memenuhi kebutuhan untuk berprestasi dan kebutuhan untuk berafiliasi/bersahabat untuk meneyembuhkan
