Politeness strategies used by The Character in Prince and Me Movie

ABSTRACT

In everyday conversation, there are some ways we can do to get the things we want. When we are with a group of friends, we can say to them, "Take my book!", or "Hurry up!" However, when we are in a group of adults at a formal situation, in which our parents or some respectable people are attending, we must say, "Could you please pass me that book, if you don't mind?" and "I'm sorry, I don't mean to interrupt, but could you please a bit hurry?." In different social situations, we are obligated to adjust our use of words to fit the occasion. It would seem socially unacceptable if the phrases above were reversed or it would seem impolite.

Politeness is one of parts of discourse analysis. Politeness is best expressed as the practical application of good manners or etiquette. It is a culturally defined phenomenon, and what is considered polite in one culture can often be quite rude or simply strange in another. While the goal of politeness is to make all of the parties relaxed and comfortable with one another, these culturally defined standards at times may be manipulated to inflict shame on a designated party (wikipedia.com).

This research conducted to find out what kind of Politeness Strategy used in Prince and Me movie by the main character, Paige, and what is the purpose using it.

This research design in this study is a descriptive qualitative research. In descriptive research, the result of the analysis is not mentioned in number of coefficient of cause of effect relationship but word or phrases. And this research studied is designed to obtain the information concerning the current status of phenomenon and are directed toward determining of the nature of situation as if in the time of study.

Based on the analysis, the author finds that there are four types of Politeness strategy used by the main character, Paige, in Prince and me movie, those are: Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off Record. The main character, Paige use those strategies to give some advice or warning specially to Edvard, and avoid disagreement to some her friends or her family.

By the result of this research, the researcher expects that the reader will be able to know more about politeness, especially politeness strategy by Brown and Levinson. Other than that, the researcher suggest to the readers to try any analysis by using Politeness strategy from other object, or still analyze Prince and Me movie in other aspect of linguistic.
