Abstract

ABSTRACT

Syntax is the study of the principles and processes by which sentences are constructed in particular language (Chomsky, 1957:1). Grammatical Transformation Grammar assumes that there are two levels for each sentence, a deep structure that represents the meaning and surface structure that represents the sound (Bornstein,1977:37). while tree diagrams has become the widely used way of displaying the making of the sentence. The tree diagrams provide a prise means of defining syntactic relation. Here, I wanted to find out the syntactic deep structures of the interrogative sentences found in surah Al-Rum and the syntactic surface structures of the interrogative sentences found in surah Al-Rum.

In this research, the object analyzed is the translation of surah Al-rum in the Holy Qur’an that translated by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall in ‘e-text version of the book of the glorious Qur’an published on May 30th, 2005.

In conducting this study, I use Qualitative method, the data are taken from the sentences that are used in English translation of surah Al-Rum. In obtaining the data I use some instrument, those are: First, I read all the English translation of surah Al-Rum and gathers the interrogative sentences. Second I identifies and underlines all sentences. Then taking and printing out the English translation of the holy Qur’an by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall, classifying which one the interrogative sentences, and writing down the interrogative sentences used in the English translation of surah Al-Rum and the last analyzing and describing and found of the interrogative sentences to be analyzed.

The finding of this study show that at least the formula of interrogative sentences consist of NP+VP. It also starting by the Q symbol, while the Q- transformation starts by Aux, and the wh-Question starting by adv. P. For nominal sentences consist of NP+Be. As formula of iterrogative sentences.

Finally, after finishing this study, I hopes that this study can give contribution to me myself and to reader or the further me who conduct the same study. Hopefully further I who conducts a similar study could complete this research.
