Abstract

ABSTRACT

Sometimes people do not care of the grammar when they talk. The most important thing is that the listener can understand what the speaker intends to convey and to have the same reasonable interpretation between the speaker and the listener. It causes many ungrammatical English statement produced in conversation. As Finegan (2002) states that a person should have two competences. He or she should have communicative competence and grammatical competence. Communicative competence purposes to develop public speaking ability. Meanwhile, grammatical competence purposes to avoid confusing messages that the tour guide wants to be expressed. This is the reason why this study is intended to study about ungrammatical English statement used by the tour guide.

This study is intended to study about types of ungrammatical English statements which are found in conversation between a tour guide and a foreign tourist. Therefore, the object of this study is one of the tour guides of Sunrise Holiday Tour and Travel.

The data source of this study is the conversation produced by the tour guide who have been transcribed then analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. Meanwhile, the researcher is the key instrument of this study. She recorded the data in the form of conversation, transcribed the conversation, selected the data and categorized the data by herself. Besides that, she also uses a recorder to record the conversation of the tour guide with his foreign guests.

The result of this study shows that there are four types of ungrammatical English statement found in the conversation between the tour guide of Sunrise Holiday Tour and Travel with the foreign tourist. They are category of number, category of person, category of voice, and category of tenses. On the other hand, there is a category type of ungrammatical not found, it is category of gender. Although the statements have many ungrammatical statements, it is still understandable because the listener understand what the speaker means. It is showed by the listener respond given. Then, the most dominant type of ungrammatical English statement found in this study is category of person. It is caused by the speaker who tends to ignore in using of personal pronoun or the third person in the statement.

This study gives suggestions to the language users, such as the students, the next researcher, especially the tour guides. They should not only try to understand what the words mean or what the speaker intends to convey through read pieces of language, but also people should be capable of understanding or recognizing ungrammatical construction and correct versus incorrect or ungrammatical produced in conversation.
