Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literary quality is the degree related to literary in knowing whether a work is good or not. Here is the literary quality of character presentation in novel and graphic novel. We know that graphic novel is a new term in literary work. It is still unwell known in the literary fiction consumers’ mind. I do an analysis about graphic novel for raising it compared to the common one. This analysis is done by elaborating the character presentation, literary quality, and then the comparison. I take Stephenie Meyer’s novel and graphic novel Twilight because Meyer presents her characters in detail here, and as a popular work, Twilight is the first work that has two form, novel and graphic novel.
This research aims to find the literary quality of the character presentation in novel and graphic novel. Then structuralism is applied to reach the aim of this research. It is appropriate because structuralism elaborate the intrinsic element of a work. Then this research uses descriptive qualitative method. Here are the steps in collecting data. Read the stories, give the code to everything related to the characterization of the main character, list the data collected, clarify data based on the problem, describe the clarification based on the research problem, interpret data, then analyze them based on the theory used.
The direct technique applied by Meyer can be divided into the use of name, the use of appearance, and direct author narrative. The indirect technique is divided into the use of dialogue, action, and indirect author narrative. Meyer’s direct technique consists of four aspects in literary qualities, they are coherence, originality, innovation, and complexity. Then Meyer’s indirect technique consists of coherence and innovation only. Finally, both novel and graphic novel used the same basic character presentation technique, but graphic novel is more attractive.
