Abstract
ABSTRACT
Cohesion is one of the criteria of sequence of sentence and have relations of meaning existed within the text. It can be achieved as cohesive devices. Cohesive devices is the tools of cohesion to create unity of meaning within a text. It will help the listeners or readers to interpreting the text or discourse. The writer analyzes cohesive devices expressed by the main character in short story “the Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde because the utterances of the main character has constructed many cohesive devices both grammatical and lexical cohesive devices and expressed in narrative text.
This study investigates types, the functions of cohesive devices expressed by the main character and the responses of the interlocutor after heared cohesive devices in short story “The Happy Prince” by Oscar Wilde.
The descriptive qualitative method used to analyze the data in this study. The data is presented descriptively because it describe and explains cohesive devices expressed by the main character in “The Happy Prince” such as describe the types, the functions and how the responses of the interlocutor after heared cohesive devices in the utterances.
The findings show that there are two types of cohesive devices found in this study; grammatical cohesive devices which comprise reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction, then lexical cohesive devices which comprise reiteration and collocation. This study found that the most widely used is reference which function to indicate reference pronoun. However, collocation has not found.
For the results, it is expected that this study is useful for teachers, students, and everyone who has intension to produce qualified of written and oral text. It is hoped that this study contributes important information for the next writer who is interested in doing the same kind of study. However, it is suggested for further researcher to use another theory of cohesive devices, so that different result might be found.
