Abstract
ABSTRACT
Implicature refers to implied meaning in utterance which can be understood through not direct expression. It needs more interpretation to get the intended meaning. Implicature is a part of pragmatics that concerns with implied meaning that is inferred from an utterance or words, but it is not the truth of utterance or words. This research focuses on analyzing utterances by using theory of implicatures and cooperative principle proposed by Grice. This research aims to identify kinds of implicatures that is found in “Crash” movie, and discover how the implicatures are used in.
The method which is used in this research is descriptive qualitative method because the data are in the form of words or utterances rather than number. In addition, the data were described descriptively based on Grice’s theory of implicatures. This method was chosen since the accurate result from analyzing the data should be gained.
The result of this research reveals some findings covering the formulated research problems. First, the implicatures used in this “Crash” movie can be categorized as generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature. Generalized conversational implicature used when the information being conveyed is clear, brief, and no context is required by the hearer to understand the information. While particularized conversational implicature is used when the speakers do not give the clarity or sufficiency information to the hearer. Therefore, the context required by the hearer to understand the intended information or messages.
Finally, the researcher suggests to the next researchers who are interested in doing research in the same area to make this research be more complete analysis and look for the other unique conversation in the other situation to give something new.
