English compound words used in Hello Magazine

ABSTRACT

Morphology is the study of the structure of the words; the component of the grammar that include the rules of word formation. Word formation is very active in language. It means that people especially the readers just know word formation which is exists without knowing the process of it. There are many parts of word formation process; derivation, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, back formation, conversion, etc. this study the researcher only identify compound words. Compound word is new words formed by stringing together to create other words. It is often used in English speaking and English reading text.

The researcher analyzes Hello Magazine because it is the source of English reading texts which one of them is short story. Short story has role as the media that provide English studying of good reading material to the readers. Besides, there are some compound word that the researcher feel need to be known more specifically, so that is why the researcher interested to analyze Hello Magazine.

This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data are taken from the Hello Magazine. This research describes about the kinds of compound words and the relations between meanings of compound words which are analyzed based on the data. So the researcher analyzes the data to be more specific. And it all of the data are used in Hello Magazine especially on short story.

In this study there are eight categories of compounding word that can be found in this discussion, they are noun + noun, adjective + noun, adjective + verb, adjective + proposition, adjective + adverb, noun + verb, noun + adjective, adverb + noun, verb + noun, verb + adverb, proposition + noun, proposition + verb which include in three types of compound words. Those are solid compound word, open compound word and hyphenated compound word. They can be found in short story of Hello Magazine, after the researcher analyzed the short story, the researcher found many of compound word, like Nightclub, Background, Widespread, Check-in, Hyper immune, Back out, Household, Soul mate, Aircraft, Self-confident, Well-oiled, Overflows, Playtime, Greenhouse, Boy friend, Far- away, Childhood, Life giving, Straightforward, Waterproof, Beforehand, all of it have a correlation with the theory which is the researcher done in this study.

Finally, the writer suggests and has big expectation to the next researcher to be able to explore the kind of compound words and the meaning of compound words more specific in investigating the data until those can be better and more perfect in studying of compound words. The writer also hopes that this study will be worth enough an addition reference for those who want to make further study in this field.
