Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature is different from Psychology, as we know; literature is related to fiction world, drama, poem, and essay that classified into art, while psychology refers to erudite study about the behavior of human being and mental process. Even different, both have encounter or equality, namely both leaving from human being and life as source of study. Discussing about human being, psychology involve into it, because psychology studies about behavior.
Pathological Envy is compounded emotion. The emotion is brought on by the realization of some lack, deficiency, or inadequacy in oneself. The pathological envy is also reflected in literary works, one of them is Josephine Hart’s Sin. It tells about human being whom experience pathological envy. It conveys envy as one of the big human life in which envy is considered as an inferior problem by another problem in.
The objective of this study is to analyze about pathological envy in the main character of Josephine Hart’s Sin. Especially, it is to find the causes of the pathological envy and effects of the pathological envy.
To study about pathological envy deeper, we have to deal with psychological theory. Unconscious envy or primary envy is one of the theories in psychology that can be used to analyze a literary work. Unconscious envy is a family of psychological theories and methods based on the pioneering work of Melanie Klein. As a psychodynamic theory, unconscious envy implies the subject’s relation to only one other person, and relates back to the earliest exclusive relation with the mother, as good object. The subject envies the object for some possession or quality, initially in terms of part-objects, but this inevitably will persist into whole object relations.
The discussion of this analysis finds out some of the causes of envy. It is caused by deprivation and disparity such as unequal treatment and disproportional condition. Then, the pathological envy can cause some of effects or psychological problem. The psychological are depression, frustration, hatred, ambition, idealization, sabotaging, aggression, and guilt. The researcher, then, concludes that there something which one able to cause the pathological envy in human life. In addition, the pathological envy can give some effects to our life.
