Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research analyzes about the loanwords from French to English cuisine term used in Ratatouille movie. Loanwords are words adopted by the speakers of one language from a different language (the source language). The loanwords can also be called a borrowing. The main source of creating new word in English is by borrowing from other languages. By this research, we understand how the process of borrowing word is, how it got imported to English and what the changes occur along the way.
To conduct this study the researcher uses descriptive qualitative research method. The data of this research are the words spoken by the characters or written in Ratatouille movie, and then the researcher takes the data for this research from the English loanwords from French found in Ratatouille movie. To make this analysis clearly, the researcher identified the borrowing word based on George Yule theory. In analysing the data, the researcher classified the loanword based on its origin and the researcher takes only the English loanword which is from French origin and then the researcher analyzed those words based on loanword theory by Betz to know the process of how words are imported to English and what changes occur along the way.
The result of this research found that most new words are created by borrowing. By this research, we know how those loanwords got imported to English and what changes occur along the way. In short, we have to say that each loanword got imported through different processes; there are 3 processes of how words are imported to English: 26 loanwords are identified as importation, 2 loanwords are identified as partial substitution and 1 word is identified as substitution. Therefore, each word has different form and usage. Finally, from this research, the researcher has learned that to use the loanword we have to use it in a proper context; where and to whom we deliver the term. It shows us that we cannot say any loanword in an inappropriate context.
Words never end and always go on. As the result of the study, it is suggested to students of English Department to learn more about the word formation process especially loanword in order to understand how the process of creating new word by borrowing and learn how to identify the loanwords by the process of adopting word to English. It is also hoped that this research gives empirical data to English lecturers about English loanword from French and encourages them to conduct the research of different objects of study. Furthermore, it is also suggested to future researchers to continue in conducting the research about morphological analysis, because there are areas which is possible to be investigated. In this study, the word formation process is the mainly type of morphological point of view. Therefore, it is suggested for further researcher to investigate an object which might contains mostly another type of the word formation process, for example: The Hierarchical Structure of Words, Word Classes and Morphological Point of View.
